About this Website...

A bit about the website and how it's been designed and run from the designers.

Hosting

The Horbury School website is hosted inhouse via a firewalled ADSL Connection. It runs on a FreeBSD-based server running cPanel/WHM11, Apache2.2, PHP5.2.9, and MySQL, and uses LDAP authentication to authenticate against our MS ActiveDirectory Domain Controllers thus providing single-sign-on for all available web services.

The server itself is a Dual Xeon 2.4Ghz HT system with 2Gb Ram, running a Raid-5 array with backups to a secondary internal array, and to tape. The entire server is then mirrored to a second dedicated server for failover redundancy, utilising rSync and MySQL replication over gigabit links, where a further set of backups take place (to tape). Should there be a major issue with the primary server, the secondary server can be brought online within a matter of minutes. We are currently working on a fully automated failover system.

Design

The site has been wholly designed (and is also updated & maintained) inhouse by our ICT Support team. The CMS framework and design was developed using Adobe Photoshop CS3 and Adobe Dreamweaver CS3. The site was designed to be viewable at a minimum resolution of 1024 x 768, and is compatible with all current web-browsers & platforms. It utilises AJAX & Adobe Flash for many of it's features (eg: the Latest News block, ImageRotator and MediaLibrary), and was designed to be fully XHTML, CSS, WIA and Section508 compliant.

The ImageRotator and MediaLibrary Players are open-source (for Educational Establishments), and are available from Jeroenwijering.com

Functionality

In the backend, staff can upload video and audio, at which point the server will convert it on-the-fly to Adobe's FLV format and drop it into the relevant areas of the MediaLibrary for viewing through the browser. They can also access Serco ePortal, our Moodle VLE, Webmail, and our Online Room Booking System, as well as having access via WebDav (aka WebFolders) to their "My Documents" folder, and "Staff" and "Shared Documents" folders from home. Students also have access to the VLE and their "My Documents" area from home via the website to allow them to work from home on assignments, and can utilise the MediaLibrary if required.

To enable the user to experience the full functionality of the site, javascript must be enabled, and Adobe Flash & Adobe Reader also. These are free downloads.
