ICT

General ICT support

All of our KS3 units of work have support materials on the school VLE (Moodle) which is accessible via the school website.

All GCSE theory topics are also available on Moodle.

ICT Learning by half term and year group

Year 7

Autumn Term

Half term 1

Using ICT – An introductory unit of work encompassing working with text, images and sound in a powerpoint presenation.

Half term 2

Spreadsheet modelling – using Excel to create simple spreadsheets using formulas and creating graphs.

Spring Term

Half term 1

Computer control – creating simple programs to control devices attached to a computer

Half term 2

Safe use of the internet – searching for information efficiently and staying safe online.

Year 8

Autumn Term

Web design – designing and creating a website for a given scenario

Desktop publishing – building on the skills developed in year 7 to create professional newspaper pages.

Half term 2

Creating and manipulating databases – again, building on the skills developed in year 7 and taking them to a higher level in using databases

Sound and video – working with sound and video clips to create a short movie.

Half term 2

Summative project – integration of all the skills and knowledge learnt in KS3 to assess student progress.


Year 9

All students have started the OCR Nationals course and will complete the OCR Nationals Level 2 ICT First Award by the end of Year 9. Students will be working on Unit 1 from September through to March, followed by Unit 21 from April until the end of the school year.

KS4 ICT Options

GCSE ICT – 60% coursework, 40% final exam

Students will spend 4 of the 5 lessons each week working on their coursework as detailed below. The remaining lesson is spent preparing for the exam

Half term 1

Multimedia coursework – the first project involves creating a multimedia solution to a problem identified by each student. Full information to support this is on the school student website on the ICT section of the subjects menu.

Half term 2

Spreadsheet coursework.  Students will be working on their second of four coursework project based on spreadsheets.  Full information to support this is on the school student website on the ICT section of the subjects menu.

Half term 3

Database coursework - students will start their third coursework project, based on databases.  Again, full support materials are on the school student site.

Half term 4

DTP coursework.  Students will be working on their last coursework project based on Desk Top Publishing.  Full information to support this is on the school student website on the ICT section of the subjects menu.

Half term 5

Students will be preparing for the exam by studying communication, data logging, computer control, models and simulations and then revising topics previously covered.

 

OCR Nationals

Students following this course all have 2 ICT teachers and are working on 2 separate units at any one time, one with each teacher.  Across the year, students will complete units based on Animation, Graphics, Spreadsheets, Multimedia and Databases. Full information to support this is on our VLE.

 

IT Diploma

Horbury Students and ICT staff are working in collaboration with Ossett school and Wakefield College to deliver the new IT Diploma level 2 for the first time.  We are following the OCR specification, with full unit information available on the OCR website. Students from Horbury and Ossett Schools attend joint lessons at Ossett on Tuesday each week and at Horbury on Thursday each week.

Units 6 and 7 are being delivered at Horbury School during this academic year. Ossett School are delivering Units 4 and 5 over the same timespan.

 

Year 11 Core ICT

OCR Nationals

All students are working towards the OCR Nationals Award qualification. They will be completing units based on Multimedia, Web Graphics and Animation. Full information to support this is on our VLE.

 

 
» Pageant Players Auditions

Are you (or your parents) interested in Drama and Singing? Not much on in the school holidays? Would you like to be part of an exciting local project? Then come along to the open auditions for a forthcoming musical review being presented by Horbury Pageant Players, and covering a number of genres both old and new. These auditions will be held on Thursday 5th August at St Mary's Parish Church Hall, Horbury Junction, Wakefield starting from 7:30pm. Details of show dates and rehearsals will be given then. » Results Day - 24th August
20th July, 2010

Results day will be held on Tuesday 24th August. Students will need to sign in at the main hall (year leavers 2010 between 10am and 12pm, and all other years between 12pm and 2pm) to collect their confirmation of results. If students know that they will not be available on that day they can leave a stamped addressed envelope with the Examinations team before the end of July and results will be posted out after the results day. Alternatively, results may be collected by a parent or another adult with a signed letter from the student and/or parent. Proof of ID must be available before results will be issued to anyone other than the student.

» CEOP and Facebook: a new joint initiative...

As you may have seen in the press, Facebook and the Child Exploitation and Online Protection (CEOP) Centre have joined forces to make young people safer online by launching the new 'ClickCEOP' application. (www.facebook.com/ClickCEOP)

All young users of Facebook (and their parents) are invited to add the new ClickCEOP app to their profile. Through this app, they will be able to access advice, help and support from the CEOP Centre.



» 127 Mile Bike Ride
2nd July, 2010

Jack Gledhill (Peru) is undertaking a cycle ride from Liverpool to Leeds (127 miles!) to raise money for Sense, a national charity specialising in care for Deaf and Blind people. The cycle ride will be on 22nd and 23rd July. There is a justgiving page for anyone wishing to sponsor Jack at http://www.justgiving.com/Johnathon-Gledhill

» Students assist at Horbury Street Fayre
24th June, 2010

Students from the food group and gardening club manned a stall at the Horbury Street Fayre held on Saturday 19 & Sunday 20 June. Both groups sold items which had been produced by themselves. Buns, biscuits & puddings were on offer from the food group and the gardening club sold vegetable and flower plants as well as taking orders for hanging baskets. The money raised from these sales will be put back into the groups who will utitlise it to benefit the whole school.

» World Cup on Big-Screen...

Are you worried about how you will get home next week to watch England in their third World Cup match? Are you stressed that you won't be able to enjoy the game with your friends, cheer the team on with the masses? Enjoy the talents of the team on a big screen?

Well, worry no more!

For one afternoon, and one afternoon only, Horbury School will be screening England versus Slovenia, for students, in our main hall. The football will begin at 3.00 p.m. and will finish at approximately 5.00 p.m. Students can come and watch for free, but any unsuitable behaviour will result in you being asked to leave.
