2 Students' Trip to Romania
Today we interviewed one of our students who recently went on a trip to Romania. We asked Jasmine why she went on the trip and who she went with? Jasmine told us that she and Ross, another student at Horbury had gone on the trip as part of an eco project in school.  The trip had given them the opportunity to see what different places are like. They had taken a taxi to the airport and then a four hour flight to Bucharest. Jasmine and Ross were accompanied on the trip by Miss Tickell who is one of the teachers involved in the Eco Group at Horbury School and Mr Mash who is a Cover Supervisor.
Jasmine went on to tell us that she had enjoyed the experience and meeting different people. One of the things that Jasmine found interesting was the way the Romanians learnt to speak English and that was by watching American films!
When asked if she would like to visit Romania again, Jasmine’s reply was a definite YES!

Antibullying Week 2010

This week is Anti Bullying Week which happens during November every year.
We have anti bullying week to make people realize bullying is not right and
also to make people more aware of the support available if they are been bullied or they are the bully.
To promote Anti Bullying Week at Horbury School we have sold wristbands and presented assemblies. New Year 7 students also signed up to the Cyber Mentors website which is used for people with bullying related issues and everyday issues.
We will be ending the week with a non uniform day to raise money for Children in Need and Beat Bullying.
Anti bullying week is important because it lets people know that no matter what, there is always someone out there to help you and also if people are not aware of Anti Bullying Week it will hopefully make them feel inspired.

Mrs Lindop Speaks Out
On Thursday morning the 18th November 2010 we interviewed Mrs Lindop one of our Learning Support Assistants due to her involvement in the Anti Bulling Week assembly.

The first question we asked her was ‘Do you think it’s a good thing to acknowledge Anti-Bullying Week in school?’
Her response was “yes it’s really important, without it many children won’t and don’t know where to start or who to talk to so anything that shows the whole school are working together to help anyone who has been bullied or is a bully is good.”

The next question we asked was “was it a difficult decision to make to take part in this years Anti-Bullying Week assembly?”
Mrs Lindop replied “no, if what happened to me at school can give courage to a child whose being bullied, to speak out, or even to a bully who wants to change their ways, then good. People will see that it can affect anyone and hopefully I can help. They now know they know they can come and talk to me.”

We then went on to ask her, what advice would you give to anyone who is being bullied? “Tell someone doesn’t keep it to yourself and think it will go away it wont, it never does but talking to people you trust makes a world of difference. Things can creep up on you and it can get really hard to talk so tell someone, we are all here to help.”

Our final question to Mrs Lindop was “Is enough done to stop bullying?”
“That’s a difficult question, yes, there’s loads going on to stop it, we have Anti- Bullying Week, CyberMentors, Mentors, PSO’S, well anyone in school really. We all know it goes on, so doing all the above can only get the message out, that your not alone, there are people who will listen, not judge and do their damned hardest to help in any way they can. Children can see that there is help out there, you just need to ask!”

Year 7 Students Sign Up

Many of the Year 7 students who took part in the BBC News School Report signed up to the CyberMentors website. Last year at Horbury School we did this as a whole school and it was a great success. Each year now we will have our Year 7 students sign up. We feel this is a great opportunity for our school to show to and the wider community that our school want to help Horbury School students in any way possible. We asked some of our class if they had experienced bullying and several said they had. Many of the students said they would have used CyberMentors if they had known about it.

Floods get Cornwall Swimming
Yesterday people found out that most of the roads where closed because of heavy rain in Cornwall and flooding on the streets reached 6 ft deep. Cars and lorries were swept away and people got stuck into their houses and cars until the RAF helicopters arrived.
In St. Blazey the rain flooded half of a football pitch which stopped play for Cornwall football team. Most of the harbour side shops were flooded as disappointment slowly drifted around Cornwall.

A shopkeeper said “we could not get within 20 feet of the shop, all our displays are ruined, and it is unbelievable.” The manger of the Ship Inn, said “the bar was waste deep in muddy brown water.” The River Fowey burst its banks; the river is located in Lostwithiel. An empty car was also washed down into the harbour at Portloe.

Irelands Unfinished Houses

New house apartments in Shannon Quay have been abandoned because the builders don’t have enough money. The buildings have been left for the ghosts because of no money to finish them off. The houses are soulless and plain with no inhabitants. The houses are empty because there is no electricity, water or furniture. It is also not a healthy environment. The houses used to cost £300,000 and now they are only cost a third of that price. The recession is extremely bad in Ireland and as a result of this there are 300,000 empty houses which are left unfinished.

Money problems have been so bad kitchens have had to be built to feed the local people that were supposed to live in the houses. The local people are being very cautious with there money around the new unbuilt houses. The senior politicians reckon that it will be ten years before they will find a solution to the economic problems. People are wary about living in the new houses because they are worried that not enough money has gone in to the construction of the housing.

Student Tries To Extinguish Tuition Fees

During riot of angered students fighting for tuition fees, a fire extinguisher was dropped from the roof of the Tory head quarters this was captured by TV cameras and aimed at the police below. The man accused of throwing the extinguisher was released on bail, but he had to stay at home in Southampton.
Also windows were smashed and doors were broken. There was really bad injures and glass everywhere this was on 24 Nov 2010.

Susan Boyle's Big Moment

Susan was probably one of the most unlikely stars to become a multi-millionaire. Shocking news states she has broken history by being the first ever solo artist to have a number 1 hit in both UK and US within 12 months. Simon Cowell called her his ‘super woman’ after he found out. Only the Monkeys and the Beatles have achieved this so it’s a great success for a woman who started out by winning Britain’s Got Talent.

Trip to Romania

Mr Mash, a Cover Supervisor at Horbury School has just returned from a trip to Romania. We asked Mr Mash about his trip and he said that the trip was a success, because all the people there were kind and helpful. The way he travelled he thought was a good way to travel. The people that he visited were kind and respectful. He said that he will do it again one day. He thought Romania was a very good place to visit and he said it was a once in a life time opportunity.

What Is Work Like?

At our school, year 11 students have just completed a week of work experience. They did a variety of jobs out in the local community and further afield. Some students even stayed in school and worked alongside our own teachers and support staff.
This week long experience gives our year eleven students a taste of what life is like in the work place.

On the morning of Thursday 18th November 2010, we carried out an interview with Mrs Stringer, Business Manager and Mrs Shingler, Aim High Coordinator whose job it is to organise work experience. We wanted to find out the pros and cons of work experience.

To commence we asked them if they thought work experience was a good thing for students to take part in. They answered by telling us that, “It’s a great thing, and in the past students have benefited greatly. It gives them the confidence to go out in the working world and experience what it is like to be part of a business, undertaking different tasks that help a business survive. It also enables them to understand that working can be challenging and that, at times isn’t the easiest of things to do, but doing it in year 11 while they’re still young gives them a real idea of what it is like.”

We then wanted to know if work experience was a difficult thing to organise. They responded by saying, “To organise 210 work placements for 210 students is a very challenging and demanding thing to do, especially as there is a recession which means that even less companies are taking students on as extra help. However, we feel that giving year 11 students this opportunity is a necessity and without doing some form of experience could mean that they lack confidence in getting a job in the future, so that is why we go to great lengths in arranging things like this. This year we found 160 placements for students where they actually left the school site and went out into the working world to experience ‘work’, however,  the other 50 students were given a placement on the school site where they helped out in school whilst still completing some form of school work.”

After finding out how hard it was to organise, we realised that planning must take a long time, so we wanted to find out when they had to start planning for this years work experience. To this their response was “As this was the first time in 3 years that we were going to organise a week of work experience where the whole of year 11 undertakes some form of work we had to start in July, however this meant that we only had over the summer holidays to ring up 210 companies asking them if they accepted students for work placements. For next years year 11’s we have already started ringing up and asking businesses if they are willing to take on placements so that students will have time to ring up their placements when they get them and build up that contact so they are more confident when they start their work experience.

Finally, we wanted to know if it was something that all the students were happy to take part in. They answered by saying “Well, at first students show negativity about work experience because they start to get nervous and the idea of being without friends and being with adults that you don’t know can be pretty daunting. But we feel that after students have undertaken their placement they gain a certain confidence which they didn’t have before and they have learnt how to take responsibility of their own lives and they don’t have a teacher guiding them every step of the way.”
